    1 Salah satu upaya untuk meningkatkan mutu bunga anggrek di Indonesia adalah dengan cara merakit varietas-varietas tanaman baru melalui persilangan. Persilangan dilakukan antara dua tetua anggrek Dendrobium yang memiliki karakter rajin berbunga dengan warna bunga yang cerah. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendapatkan varietas baru anggrek Dendrobium yang berdaya hasil tinggi. Penelitian dilakukan mulai tahun 2005 di Kebun Percobaan Segunung dan Kebun Percobaan Pasarminggu. Persilangan yang dilakukan adalah 2 arah. Setiap nomor seri persilangan menghasilkan 1-2 buah yang bijinya disebar pada media steril. Dalam kurun 5 tahun telah dilakukan sebanyak 200 nomor seri persilangan, namun hanya 20 nomor seri yang berhasil membentuk plantlet. Hal ini disebabkan karena banyak bunga hasil silangan yang gugur, buah terlambat dipanen, dan terjadinya kontaminasi saat penyebaran biji. Dari 20 populasi yang ada, baru dilepas sebanyak 9 varietas.
