    1 Sabut kelapa adalah bahan limbah tanaman yang mudah diperoleh, diketahui mempunyai sifat fisiko kimia yang cocok untuk media tumbuh tanaman hias. Sejauh ini penggunaan sabut kelapa sebagai media tumbuh tanaman belum digunakan secara luas, mengingat belum memenuhi standar intemational industri tanaman hias. Australian Quarantine Inspection menentukan persyaratan bahwa, media sabut kelapa harus bebas patogen terutama Escherichia coli dan Salmonella sp., yang patogenik terhadap manusia dan hewan. Untuk menganalisis kandungan mikrobe patogenik pada sabut kelapa digunakan bakteri coliform sebagai indikator. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui kandungan E. coli, Salmonella sp. dan bakteri lainnya pada sabut kelapa yang akan digunakan untuk media tumbuh tanaman hias. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Laboratorium, Balai Penelitian Veteriner Bogor. Sejak Mei sampai Desember 2002. Di dalam penelitian ini contoh spesimen dibagi tiga bagian, kemudian dimasukan ke dalam labu Erlenmeyer ukuran 250 ml. Masing- masing labu diberi label perlakuan sebagai berikut : A = 10 g Serbuk Sabut Kelapa + 180 ml Buffered peptone water (BPW - Oxoid, 1982) = S2K., B = 10 g Serbuk & Serat Sabut Kelapa + 180 ml BPW - Oxoid (1982) = S3K., C = I0 g Serbuk &. Serat Sabut Kelapa + 180 ml BPW - Oxoid (1982) dan diinfestasikan masing-masing 1 ml suspensi E. coli dan Salmonella sp. = S3K plus. Kerapatan mikrobe yang digunakan adalah 10 8 colony forming unit (cfu)/ ml suspensi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sabut kelapa tidak mengandung E. coli, dan Salmonella spp.,. Namun di dalam sabut kelapa ditemukan kuman yang mirip E. coli yaitu Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas sp., dan Citrobacter sp dan Bacillus circularis, B. megaterium, dan B. firmus. Berdasarkan kriteria AS Standar 1776.5.2.1, most probable number pada perlakuan tersebut berturut-turut adalah 0,7; 4,6; dan > 480 chu/ g.
